Group Stakeholder Pensions - with ifasw.co.uk
Since 8 October
2001, the British Government has required all employers with five or more staff to
provide a stakeholder pension, or equivalent pension arrangement, for
their employees (risking fines of up to £50,000 by not
complying). You
may already have such an arrangement in place, or wish to set up a scheme.
In either case you may find the following points useful:
The full basic State Pension for 2005/06 is £82.05 for a
single person and £131.20 for a couple.
Men
need 44 qualifying
years to get a full basic State Pension and women who reach 60 before
2010 need 39 qualifying
years. Source: The
Pension Service.
Stakeholders were
created to entice employees (amongst others) to save for retirement in
light of the above statistics, and strict standards were laid down by the
government to make them attractive.

Group
stakeholders are simple, flexible savings schemes arranged by the
employer, who may choose to make some form of contribution but is by
no means obliged to.

The
aim of stakeholder is to help employees save for retirement in a
tax-efficient way, providing them with an income during retirement
(thus removing reliance on the state).
Employees may also choose to take a proportion of the pension fund as a tax-free lump sum.

The
employee and the employer can pay into the plan regularly, usually
every month or year.

Employees
can make one-off contributions, alter the contribution level, or stop
and start regular contributions at any time.

You
can transfer your stakeholder pension if you change jobs.
